Dare I say, we have a blockbuster deal to announce? Kinda sorta, definitely the kind you see on a deadline day.
White Sox Send
CI D.J. LeMahieu (NYY) – 24: $4.5M / 25: FA
P Kyle Gibson (STL) – 24: $10.2M / 25: FA
P Adrian Morrejon (SD) – 24: $0.85M (PP 3/5)
MI Felnin Celesten (0.7 minor league)
MI Cooper Kinney (0.7 minor league)
Cards Send
CI/OF Cody Bellinger (CHC) – 24: $8.6M / 25: FA
CI/MI/OF Josh Smith (TEX) – 24: $1.8M / 25: FA
P Miles Mikolas (STL) – 24: $2.6M / 25: $5.3M / 26: $7.4M / 27: FA
P Andrew Kittredge (STL) – 24: $1.0M / 25: FA
CI/MI/OF Luis Rengifo (LAA) – 24: $1.25M
First of all, this deal came together rather quickly once I decided it was time to throw in the towel on this season. Despite my W/L record, my offense has been way too inconsistent and I have had too many injuries that linger on even after the player returns to be competitive in the playoffs. Thus, I am going to try to trade some assets on expiring contracts (plus a pitcher with two more control years but had to be included because Kyle Gibson had to be on the other side for cap reasons ... I know, its complicated!
Bellinger, Smith, and Kittredge are great assets who will help a playoff team immensely, but I was not going to be able to keep them so I want to at least get futures rather than let them help guide my team into 12th place (or so) and then let them walk for nothing. Luis Rengifo is on an expiring deal but actually could be a decent tag candidate, but since I plan to tag Will Smith and Ryan Helsley I would not be able to keep him. In return I am getting two MI prospects, with Cooper Kinney having a decent ceiling as an MLB regular 2B and Felnin Celesten having a pretty high ceiling and still a low floor as an 18 year old -- definitely worth taking the chance on though. Morrejon can at least fill the hole left by Kittredge's departure and he has two more years of team control.
Great talks with Aidan. The hard part was making the cap numbers work (and he just would ... not ... part ... with Rhett Lowder! :-)
