“Big Papi”, a slugging designated hitter/first baseman, was a central force for the Boston Red Sox for 14 seasons. Ortiz, a native of the Dominican Republic, was traded by the Seattle Mariners and released by the Minnesota Twins before embarking on an extraordinary career in Boston, where he played on championship teams in 2004, 2007, and 2013. Ortiz hit .455 with three home runs and 14 RBI in 14 World Series games and was the MVP in 2013 when he batted .688 with two homers and six RBI in 16 at-bats. An eight-time winner of the Edgar Martinez Award as the most outstanding designated hitter, Ortiz led the AL with 127 RBI in his final season in 2016, ending his career with a .286 batting average, 541 home runs, 632 doubles, and 1,786 RBI over 20 seasons. The 10-time All-Star and seven-time Silver Slugger Award winner led the AL in RBI three times, and his 1,192 extra-base hits are tied for eighth all-time. He retired as one of only four players with at least 500 home runs and 600 doubles. His 20 walk-off hits in the regular season are the third-most in MLB history, and his 485 home runs as a DH are the most by any player at the position.
