Not really sure where to put this, but I have a question. So Corey Kluber is going to be a FA after the season, and I'm trying to decide if a restrict or franchise tag should be used on him. If he was a pp, he would be completing his 3rd year out of the 5. This situation is making me wonder if I do protect him w franchise tag would he then become like a pp protected for 2 more years or would the protection only last for 1 more yr?? I've never encountered a situation like this and don't know if there's a set rule on this. I'd like to franchise him but don't want to have to use another tag next yr.

It's my understanding that he'd only get his 1 yr contract if franchised. I can't remember a specific instance but I believe this has been encountered before.

I think this is correct. You burn a tag every year if they're still in arbitration. I had this situation in Moneyball with Chris Davis last year and maybe this year too. I believe the rule is the same.

When you use a franchise tag, you assume the real life contract of the player is signed to on opening day.

In Kluber's case, if he only signs a 1 yr deal in real life, then you would only have him under contract for the same.
