2016-17 RFA Wrap-Up and Bid Ranges

The 2016-17 Offseason got started in a scorching fashion. Restricted Free Agency featured 19 player contracts totaling $1.1 Billion dollars in total value. It’s safe to say the Braves controversially led the way with a pair of backloaded contracts, handing out identical 7/140 contracts to Aroldis Chapman and Matt Carpenter. Max Scherzer was king of RFA, fetching 21.5M over 7 years from the White Sox (matched by the Indians). Johnathon Villar was far and away the most pursued RFA, ultimately providing 7 prime years to the Phillies. Not without distinct six figure risk. Other major contracts include Dallas Keuchel to the Brewers and Rangers making a clever bet on Wilson Ramos. Collin McHugh gets a surprising 13.5M AAS to potentially join the South Siders. Middle Infielders continued to be popular, with Jason Kipnis (63M) and DJ LeMahieu (48M) inking substantial deals. Two pitchers experienced their markets collapse, providing team friendly deals settled by Wade Davis (4/40) and Ivan Nova (4/16.4).

There never is in RFA. If you want to resign your RFA, you better have the cash available. Also, it looks like the 20M AAS on Villar was an outlier as all the other bids were within 3M of each other. I know he is young and works out, but alotting that much cap to him seems a bit much, but that was probably one of the few numbers that was gonna keep Amy from resigning.
