The 2019 catching market can only be described as tepid. Over half the league sat out on a servicable group, certainly lacking in upside. The Braves were aggressive, signing Mike Zunino and his 20 homer power to the largest AAS of the week. Only three catchers signed contracts longer than a year and none were able to garner a three year deal. Two of the catchers went to the Reds, as Welington Castillo and Kurt Suzuki will comprise the Cincy backstop duo for the next two seasons. The Yankees get Tucker Barnhart, with his glove guaranteeing his decent bat stays in the lineup, was the other catcher to get two years. The New York Mets went on an extravaganza, inking four catchers to identical $2.5M, one-year deals; raising eyebrows around the league.
