This weekend at work was ridiculous, so I'm a bit later than I'd like, but I have a first attempt tournament team build. If you're trying to set something up here, hopefully this helps.
First the target tournaments: Bronze card max quicks. This is usually where I start the year, as bronze cards have a very reasonable price point, so it isn't too expensive to build a roster. This has the added bonus that the format for bronze quicks this year takes a very short time to complete a tournament, so the potential for winning a lot in a short time is there.
How I funded it: I sold everything I pulled from my starting packs that had value. Then I got packs by linking my twitch account with the game and having twitch streams on in the background muted. Then I sold everything from those packs too. My main team is in Iron and is terrible and may be demoted. Don't care. That doesn't matter yet. The war chest is somewhere around 20k PP after buying a bunch for this build.
Build strategy: I hit dingers. Failing that, I get on base. I prioritized defense at 2B and SS, getting elite defensive players who can also hit. Guys who can't hit were not considered, regardless of quality of glove. Beyond that, I looked for power first and foremost, and eye second. Other categories weren't considered much. I'm running 14 batters/12 pitchers with a 4 man rotation, hoping to capitalize on off days from the format. 2 bullpen pitchers are designated as emergency starters just in case. I'm running platoons at 3 positions offensively, and I feel I could increase this considering I have multiple bench players who don't start in a vL or vR lineup. Seems inefficient. Some of my defense is outright comically bad (Looking at you, 2017 Joey Gallo playing 3B). Pitching, I went with possibly a bad idea, minimizing stuff (strikeouts) in favor of movement (Low HR rate, low BABIP) and control. Pitcher BABIP being a rating is a new thing this year. I'm curious how much it matters. All my pitchers are pretty good at it. We'll see if this outweighs my terrible defense.
Results so far: Pretty good, I think. This went into effect at 4 today, and I've won 4 tournaments since. Tweaks are needed, and high K pitchers are a more obvious route if this one results in struggles. Strategies for the team are default so far, which is bad and wrong. Working on that next.
If you're thinking about running tournament teams in this silly game, I hope this helps. I enjoy it.
