Before we get to the matchups to watch in week 3, let's recap the 5 matchups from week 2
#5 - Chicago White Sox vs. San Diego Padres - Score: 6-6 (Padres win tiebreaker)
In terms of playoff implications, this was one of the bigger games of the week, and it more than lived up to its billing as a close matchup. Neither team dominated in either pitching or hitting, winning 3 categories each. The deciding factor was San Diego's depth, as they racked up the counting stats and won the tiebreaker behind their 6 steals.
#4 - Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox - Score: 5.5-6.5 (BOS)
Another extremely close game. Boston took this one home off an outstanding offensive showing, winning all but one hitting stat. Tampa kept it close with their pitching, but the game was decided by Boston edging Tampa Bay in ERA.
#3 - Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Washington Nationals - Score: 5-7 (WAS)
All but one of these matchups were by 1 point or less, which is all you can ask for a first week of this segment. Due to injuries, Arizona missed IP minimums for the week, but still were well within striking distance of the win.
#2 - New York Yankees vs. Oakland Athletics - Score: 3.5-8.5 (OAK)
The one game that wasn't all that close, Oakland won this matchup despite not hitting IP minimums. That's what can happen when you sweep all 6 hitting categories with an offensive explosion coming out of Oakland's bats.
#1 - Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Colorado Rockies - Score: 5.5-6.5 (COL)
This game wasn't decided until late on Sunday, as one Run separated the teams. The Dodgers' had Noda on second in the bottom of the 10th, representing the winning run for RL Oakland, and 1 out. The Athletics couldn't get the job done and lost in their game, ushering in the Dodgers' loss in this league.
