So now I have some facts and statistics to prove my points, which I always end up finding...this time by accident searching Drew Vettleson.
The Astros made a very fair trade in 2011 for Miggy Cabrera, at the time 28 and one of the top hitters in the Majors and maybe of all time...he gave up 3 good to great prospects plus the AL Rookie of the year and a young Major League starting pitcher who had won 14 games in one season...
This deal makes complete sense
1/12 (Trade)
Astros Deal:
OF: Matt Szczur - (Cubs) - MiLB
OF: Drew Vettleson - (Rays) - MiLB
CI: Will Middlebrooks - (Red Sox) - MiLB
CI: Mark Trumbo - (Angels) - $.4M (PP 1/5)
SP: Clayton Richard - (Padres) - $2M (PP 5/6)
Dodgers Deal:
RP - Clayton Tanner - (Reds) - '12: $.55M , '13: $.55M , '14-'16: $1.65 (PBC) ('17: FA)
CI - Miguel Cabrera - (Tigers) - '12: $21M , '13: $21M , '14-'15: $22M ('16: FA)
THEN
Miggy has arguably one of the best hitting seasons in 40 years, wins a triple crown at 29 yr old, has plenty of quality years still left in the tank....Value should have INCREASED over only 1 year, correct? Think again.
Astros Trade:
CI Miguel Cabrera 13:$21.0M 14-15:$22.0M
RP Chris Resop(OAK) 13:$1.75M 14: FA
SP Mike Foltyniewicz(HOU) 13:$.500 Prospect Protected(14-18)
Braves Trade:
OF: Josh Willingham(MIN) 13:$5.5M 14: FA, Trumbo more valuable
CI: Brett Lawrie(TOR) 13:$0.500M 14-16 equal to Middlebrooks
SP: Mike Minor(ATL) 13:$0.500M 14-15
So the questions for me is,
Is
Richard (8th rnd pick),
Vettleson (1st rnd pick),
Sczcur (5th rnd pick, #64 top prospect)
AL rookie of the year's value over Willingham
All combined value, is it completely below Mike Minor's value...?
Miggy's value majorly increased with a Triple Crown and MVP awards, still at 29 yr old....
The numbers support my position, the trades obviously show that Miggy's value actually decreased in this league over 1 year, just happened to be one of the best years for a hitter in 40 years.
