Well I finished the first section of my best and worst trades series. I was originally just going to put all the trades into one list, but then later decided to split them into individual posts for each year because holy shit there have been a lot of trades! I also arbitrarily cut off 2013 at May and before as to give a good amount of time to for the players to provide value. I have split in into two list. The "good trades," trades that worked out well this year for both teams, and the "bad trades," ones that I felt considerably favor one side. Also, I tried to avoid trades that involved players who haven't made it to the majors yet as those have yet to be decided yet and revolve more around my opinion than major league players. On to the rankings!
"Good Trades"
Might as well start off with some positive trades here:
1.
Phillies Trade:
SP: Felix Hernandez-13:$19.5M, 14:$20M
SP: Alex Torres-Spec
Nationals Trade:
SP: Anibal Sanchez-13:$8M, 14:$15M, 15-17:$16M
SP: Trevor Cahill-13:$5.5M
SP: Ben Sheets-13:$1.5M
C: Austin Hedges-13:Spec
OF: Gary Brown-13:Spec
First up we have a deal where both teams traded for a pitcher who has put up ace numbers and looks to do so again next year at least. On top of that both sides acquired some interesting pieces that also look to help both teams in the future. Really couldn't have worked out much better for each side. Anibal took a step forward, Felix has continued to dominate.
2.
Blue Jays trade:
OF - Carlos Gomez $2.5M (14-15:$2.25M)
MI - Derek Dietrich (TB) $400K
SP - Ethan Martin (LAD) (minor leaguer)
Padres trade:
SP - James Shields $10.98M (14: 10.98, 15: 14.98, 16-17: 18.98)
OF - Travis Snider, 2013: .800* arib. eligible, 2014: FA
Next up we have the Padres getting Gomez right as he reaches his prime, controlled for three years on the cheap. In return the Blue Jays get a great pitcher controlled for a few years. Another great example of a trade that has benefited both sides this year.
3.
The Chicago White Sox trade:
RP - Ryan Madson - (Reds) - '13: $4 , '14: $4.5 , '15: $5.524 ('16: FA)
OF - Coco Crisp- 13:$3M
CI - Jedd Gyorko - (Padres) - '13: $.5M (PP 0/5)
SP: Chris Reed (LAD) - $400,000
The Houston Astros trade:
SP Edwin Jackson(ChC) 13:$11.7M 14: FA
CL: Greg Holland(KC) 13:$2.3M 14:$2.3M
OF: Nelson Cruz(TEX) 13: $5.5M 14: $8.5M 15: $11.5M 16: $14.5M
Here we have the first sighting of me ranking my own trades! This trade has worked as I planned, helping me carve the road to a playoff spot. Holland has been outstanding and he is controlled for another year on a great contract. Cruz, until suspended, was displaying great power. On the other side the Astros got Gyorko who looks to be a good offensive player in a key position for years and a good season from Crisp to help solidify his outfield.
4.
MI: Daniel Murphy-13:$3.0M (3/5)
RP: Heath Hembree-13:spec
SP: Sonny Gray-13:spec
Phillies Send:
SP: Julio Teheran-spec
This is a nice young, promising pitcher for promising pitcher swap. Both Gray and Teheran have been great this year and look to help their respective owners rotations for years to come.
5.
Mariners trade Travis Hafner 13:$5.75M and John Lackey 13:$2M, 14:$1.75M
Cubs trade MI: Hak-Ju Lee - 2013:$0.50 (PP 0/5)
RP: Francisco Rodriguez - 2013: $8.5 14: F/A
RP: Javier Lopez - 2013:$1.2 14:$0.70
For this year the Mariners got a nice closer/holds pitcher for a strong Lackey.
6.
Arizona Diamondbacks sends to Chicago Cubs:
SS Jed Lowrie '13: 2.4m '14: FA
Chicago Cubs sends to Arizona Diamondbacks:
Tyler Clippard '13: 4m
While not a huge deal, this team worked out for both sides.
"Bad Trades"
Honorable mentions!
1.
The Chicago White Sox trade:
P- Michael Fulmer (MiLB)
The Seattle Mariners trade:
Casper Wells $500k PP-2015
Jordan Pacheco 13-14:$750k
Fulmer is still a ways from the pros, but man did Wells crash this year.
2.
Rays Send-
CI - Adrian Gonzalez - $21M (2013-2016), $21.5 (2017-2018)
RP - Dale Thayer - $0.5 (PP 1/5)
Angels Send-
MI - Chase Utley - $12.001M (2013)
OF - Alfonso Soriano - $2.25M (2013-2014)
MI - Charlie Culberson - $1M (minor)
This one rides on your opinion of Gonzalez. He has been great this year, but man, that contract. I couldn't include him on this list at that salary, but I could see an argument for him being on the back ten.
3.
Indians Trade:
Garret Jones OF/CI PIT - 13: $4.5 million
Phillies Trade:
Tyrrell Jenkins SP STL - Minors 500k
Domingo Santana OF HOU - Minors 500k
Two pretty good prospects for a one year rental who has had a slightly disappointing season.
Here we go!
10.
Orioles trade
P Brandon Workman BOS 13: .5M (0/5)
Mariners trade
OF Seth Smith OAK 13: 1.8M
The Mariners get Workman, who looks to be a solid #4 starter on a good contract for 5 years. In return they gave up one year of Seth Smith. I imagine this will be looking like a nice deal for the M's in 5 years.
9.
Mariners Get :
C - Russell Martin , PIT - 13:$7M, 14:$8M, 15:$8M
MI - Alen Hanson , PIT - 13:$1.15M PP(0/5)
SP - Hector Santiago , CHW - 13:$.5M PP(1/5)
SP - Joseph Ross , SD - 13:$.4M PP(0/5)
SP - Trevor May , MIN - 13:$.4M PP(0/5)
OF - Rymer Liriano , SD - 13:$1M PP(0/5)
Rangers Get :
C - J.P. Arencibia , TOR - 13:$.5M PP(2/5)
OF - Josh Reddick , OAK - 13:$.5M PP(2/5)
RP - Jared Hughes , Pit - 13:$.75M, 14:$.75M
MI - Johnny Giavotella , KC - 13:$.5M PP(1/5)
In this trade just about everything went wrong for the Rangers. Hughes took a huge step back this year, Reddick disappeared off the planet, Arencibia continues to not make contact, and Giavotella hasn't done anything to solidify a role in the pros. To get this package the Rangers had a surrender a bunch of intriguing pieces to look to contribute in the future.
8.
Mariners trade Jason Grilli 13:$1.67M, 14:$2.07M and Bubba Starling $500k PP
Phillies trade Billy Hamilton $500k PP
I am somewhat biased here as I am not a fan at all of Billy Hamilton. At this point I would say that Hamilton and Starling are about a wash as you could make a case at either being good pro outfielders. Adding Grilli to that though puts this over the top in the Phillies favor. Grilli has been one of the most dominating pitchers in the sport this year, and is super cheap for two years.
7.
Padres agree to trade:
Brad Peacock, HOU 2013: 1.1mil (0/5)
Wily Peralta, MIL 2013: 1mil (0/5)
Bobby Parnell, NYM2013: $1.7mil
to the Twins for:
Mike Morse, SEA: 2013: 4.5mil
Here, Morse just struggled to stay healthy/hit all year long. Aside from his hot first month he didn't do enough to justify giving up a solid closer and two young pitchers who should be decent for the next 4 years.
6.
Astros Trade:
CI Miguel Cabrera 13:$21.0M 14-15:$22.0M
RP Chris Resop(OAK) 13:$1.75M 14: FA
SP Mike Foltyniewicz(HOU) 13:$.500 Prospect Protected(14-18)
Braves Trade:
OF: Josh Willingham(MIN) 13:$5.5M 14: FA
CI: Brett Lawrie(TOR) 13:$0.500M 14-16
SP: Mike Minor(ATL) 13:$0.500M 14-15
While Minor has been great this year I expect him to regress some, Lawrie has continued to struggle at the plate, and Willingham has put forth a rather putrid performance. I'm sure the Astros hoped for for than this for the best hitter in the sport.
5.
New York Yankees Trade:
SP Jon Lester (BOS) ('13:$11.625M,'14:UFA)
SP Jose Campos (NYY) ('13:$0.4M)(PP 0/5) (Yankees #17(6) Prospect, B-/#- SP Prospect/#- OVR)
for
Kansas City Royals Trade:
SP Justin Masterson (CLE) ('13:$3.875M)(PP 4/5)
SP Jordan Lyles (HOU) ('13:$0.48M)(PP 2/5)
OF Mikie Mahtook (TB) ('13:$0.4M)(PP 0/5)
Masterson has greatly out pitched Lester this year at almost a third of the price. He is also controlled for another season. Good deal for the Yankees to get a frontline starter for two seasons.
4.
The White Sox trade:
Daniel Nava 13:$1,110,000
Hishashi Iwakuma 13-14: $6,500,000
Dillon Gee 13:$3M, 14-15
Al Alburquerque $500k (2/5)
Brent Lillibridge $500K ( 4/5 )
for
Dan Uggla 13:$13M, 14:$13M, 15:$13M
Jordan Schafer 2013 $1.4M 2014 $1.0M
Adam Reifer (minor league contract)
Shawn Kelley 3/5, .5M
Here is the move I regret making most in this league. Iwakuma has been phenomenal this year, Gee has been a solid mid rotation piece, Alburquerque has shown potential, and Nava has been good in the outfield. In return I get to watch Uggla struggle to hit .200 for three years. Well played, Bob.
3.
CI - Matt Carpenter - STL - 13: $0.5M (1/5)
SP - Tyler Thornburg - MIL - MiLB - 1.5M
MI - Ryan "Scooter" Gennett - MIL - MiLB - 1.11M
OF - Slade Heathcott - NYY - MiLB - 500K
for
SP - Kris Medlen - ATL - 13; $2.6m (4/5)
SP - Gaby Hernandez - KC - MiLB - 500K
Great work by Mike H. to get Kris Medlen for a bunch of scrubs. Ha, see what I did there. This deal has obviously worked out very well for Mike C., as he now has a great MI'er at a bargain rate for 5 years. The other pieces also lean towards the Angels to sweeten the deal.
2.
Pirates trade:
OF Starling Marte (PIT) 13: .48M (PP 1/5)
Astros trade:
OF Colby Rasmus (TOR) 13: 4.6M (Arb estimate) (PP5/5)
SP J.R. Graham (ATL) 13: .4M (PP 0/5)
I really just wanted to rank this here so we could get all of our Mikes in a row... So, that Marte guy is pretty good! And cheap! And controlled for 4 years!
1.
New York Yankees Trade:
CL Chris Perez (CLE) - Restricted Tag (NYY)
CL Carlos Marmol (CHC) ('13:$9.8M,'14:UFA)
for
Philadelphia Phillies Trade:
1B Yonder Alonso (SD) ('13:$0.48M)(PP 1/5) UPDATE
SP Anibal Sanchez (DET) ('13:$8.0M,'14:$15.0M,'15:$16.0M,'16:$16.0M,'17:$16.0M,'18:UFA)
As you might have noted earlier, I like Anibal Sanchez. He is fantastic. The Phillies surrendered 5 years of Anibal for a horrible pitcher who goes by the name of Carlos, and an oft injured Chris Perez.
This is all for today, hopefully needless to say but not trying to insult anyone by including their trades. To everyone who made the bad list today, better luck next time! Also, watch what you trade to Josh!
